چکیده

Under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) the nations of the world have pledged to limit warming to no more than 2 C above preindustrial levels. However, negotiators and policymakers lack the capability to assess the impact of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction proposals offered by the parties on warming and the climate. The climate is a complex dynamical system driven by multiple feedback processes, accumulations, time delays and nonlinearities, but research shows poor understanding of these processes is widespread, even among highly educated people with strong technical backgrounds. Existing climate models are opaque to policymakers and too slow to be effective either in the fast-paced context of policy making or as learning environments to help improve people’s understanding of climate dynamics. Here we describe C-ROADS (Climate Rapid Overview And Decision Support), a transparent, intuitive policy simulation model that provides policymakers, negotiators, educators, businesses, the media, and the public with the ability to explore, for themselves, the likely consequences of GHG emissions policies. The model runs on an ordinary laptop in seconds, offers an intuitive interface and has been carefully grounded in the best available science. We describe the need for such tools, the structure of the model, and calibration to climate data and state of the art general circulation models. We also describe how C-ROADS is being used by officials and policymakers in key UNFCCC parties, including the United States, China and the United Nations. 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. Simulation of CTAS/FMS Air Traffic Management

A simulation of integrated air and ground operations was conducted to demonstrate procedures, flight management automation, data link technology, and air traffic control decision support tools for improving Air Traffic Management (ATM) efficiency. Air traffic controllers managed simulated arrival traffic using Center-TRACON Automation System (CTAS) tools. Flight crews in Flight Management Syste...

Multilateralism after the Failure of the DDR and Climate Change Negotiations

This paper examines the two most important current efforts to devise new rules binding all nations the negotiations in the WTO of trade rules and the negotiations under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change to devise rules restricting the annual emissions of greenhouse gases. Both negotiations have failed after several years of intensive effort. There are remarkable parallels in these ...

Specification of operational flight profiles and dynamics:

Commercial-off-the-shelf flight simulators are now reconfigurable through user interface software and have a significant increase in the number of parameterised aerodynamic co-efficients available to model the fidelity of flight performance. This leads to more stringent requirements concerning the management and interpretation of flight performance data which in turn means that certification of...

Design of a Flight Management System to support four-dimensional trajectories

This paper presents a design and simulation of the functions of a Flight Management System (FMS) in order to follow automatically four-dimensional trajectories. This is achieved by controlling the aircraft airspeed, altitude, heading and vertical speed in order to arrive to the merging point in the specified time. The system receives data from the aircraft and computes new control parameters ba...

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting agricultural management for climate change in developing countries: providing the basis for action.

Agriculture in developing countries has attracted increasing attention in international negotiations within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change for both adaptation to climate change and greenhouse gas mitigation. However, there is limited understanding about potential complementarity between management practices that promote adaptation and mitigation, and limited basis to ...
